IS-2 Turret Markings
Hoi Ron,
"Soviet tanks during the Second World War were uniformly painted in very dark green.
In 1944-45, tactical insignia began to be applied more widely, mainly to assist in
traffic control during offensive operations. This IS-2 shows the elaborate markings
sometimes seen towards the end of the war. The white turret bands and white roof
cross were part of an April 1945 agreement between the Red Army and Anglo-American
military leaders to prevent Allied fighter bombers from attacking Soviet Armoured
columns as the two forces met in Germany.
On 29 April 1945, the Soviets found a German tank marked with these insignia, so it
was decided to change the insignia to a large white triangle on the roof and a small
white triangle on the turret sides. However, this second change did not take place
in significant numbers until later in May during the Prague operation.
During the Berlin operation, the white turret cross was the predominant air
identification marking."
